Each Member State is represented on the SRG by its CITES Scientific Authorities. The SRG represents collective decision making by the individual CITES Scientific Authorities and meets approximately five times a year. Details of EC CITES SRG meetings, including agendas and summaries of conclusions, can be found on the European Commission's website Explanation of SRG ResultsThe following summaries list species/countries for which the SRG have formed an opinion. These include negative opinions, that is that actual or anticipated levels of trade would have a detrimental impact on the conservation status or range of the species, or are animals which are subject to a high mortality rate during transport or are unlikely to survive in captivity for a considerable proportion of their potential life-span, or which pose an ecological threat to flora and fauna indigenous to the Community. The most recent list of negative opinions is posted on the European Commission's website. Import applications for these species/countries may be refused under the terms of Article 4.1 or 4.2 of Regulation 338/97 whilst the range states concerned are consulted. Depending on the outcome of such consultations, then the negative opinion may be translated into a formal import suspension under Article 4.6 of Regulation 338/97 by publication of a regulation amending the list of species/countries covered. Such import suspensions are reviewed regularly to see whether they continue to be justified. The SRG may also make positive opinions where, for example, a particular export quota for a particular species from a specific country will not be damaging to the conservation status in the wild. These opinions are logged on the EC Wildlife Trade Reference Databases.
